Alumni and friends will gather for this special event at the Griffin Museum of Photography where they will learn about the professional and personal skills needed to improve performance and fast track their careers.
This event features WPI alumni Brian Chu '92, senior vice president at Bain Capital LLC, and Jennifer (Shiel) Wyse '94, regionalization / cost-out leader for GE Oil & Gas, who have successfully transitioned from the cubicle to the corner office. Guests will also hear from Frank Hoy and Helen Vassallo '82G, both faculty in WPI's acclaimed School of Business, about navigating corporate culture, applying entrepreneurial thinking to all career levels and fields, and how each of us can climb the corporate ladder.

About Our Featured Speakers Brian Chu graduated from WPI in 1992 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. As an undergraduate, he was actively involved with Phi Kappa Theta and the wrestling team. After graduating from WPI his career was initially focused on IT project management and then transitioned to business leadership, prompting him to earn an MBA at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His impressive career in strategy, operations, and finance includes positions at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Bain & Company, and The Boston Beer Company. Since 2007 he has served as executive vice president at Bain Capital LLC, a global investment firm with more than $70 billion in assets under management. His career highlights also include Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, where he was CIO, and Women’s Lunch Place, where he was on the Board of Directors. Brian was awarded the WPI Alumni Association’s Ichabod Washburn Young Alumni Award for Professional Achievement in 2012.
Jennifer (Shiel) Wyse ’94 Jennifer Wyse graduated from WPI in 1994 with a BS in Management Engineering. As an undergraduate, she was actively involved with Phi Sigma Sigma, the ski team, the soccer team, the Newman Club, the Interfraternity Council, and Skull. As an alumna, Jennifer served on her class board as well as the Alumni Association Board of Directors. For her many years of volunteerism and activism on behalf of WPI, Jennifer was awarded the Alumni Association's John Boynton Young Alumni Award for Service to WPI in 2004. Jennifer has worked for GE since 1996 in various capacities, starting at GE Transportation Systems then moving to GE Aircraft Engines where she held the positions of development project leader, quality leader, program leader, integration leader and NPI business leader. After 12 years with GE’s Aircraft Engines and Aviation divisions, Jennifer was promoted to plant manager for GE Power and Water, a division of GE which develops advanced technologies to help solve the world’s most complex challenges related to renewable resources, alternative fuels, and water availability and quality.
Frank Hoy is the inaugural Paul R. Beswick Professor of Innovation & Entrepreneurship in WPI’s School of Business. He is also director of WPI’s Collaborative for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. Dr. Hoy has held endowed positions at three universities and published more than seven books and 130 articles and papers. Formerly, he held the Chair for the Study of Trade in the Americas and was director of the Centers for Entrepreneurial Development, Advancement, Research and Support in the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). From 1991 to 2001, he served as dean of UTEP’s Business College. Dr. Hoy joined WPI in 2009. He was drawn to WPI’s long-standing tradition of innovation and entrepreneurship and was impressed by how those ideals are tightly woven into the fabric of the university’s curriculum and community. Helen Vassallo '82G
Helen Vassallo is a professor of management in WPI's School of Business. She joined WPI in 1982 after a distinguished career as an educator, researcher, and business leader in the fields of physiology, pharmacology, and anesthesia. Vassallo received a B.S. from Tufts University and an M.S. from the Tufts University Medical School, then taught at Tufts, Brandeis University, Clark University, and WPI before joining Astra Pharmaceutical Products. While at Astra, she completed a PhD in physiology at Clark and an MBA at WPI, and studied organizational behavior at MIT’s Sloan Institute. At WPI, her research interests include organizational behavior, project management, and management of planned change. She served as head of the Management Department from 1989 to 1995 and held the Harry G. Stoddard Professorship in Management from 1991 to 1996. In 2003, she received the university’s Board of Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Teaching. She is the author of numerous articles, two books, and one monograph, and the co-holder of two patents.
