WPIAA PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Dear WPI Alumni:

Homecoming Weekend proved me right—it is always great to be on the Hill. The foliage was in full array, the temperature delightful and the warm autumn sun was spectacular when I arrived on Friday for the dedication of the Innovators Exhibit Space in the Gordon Library. Dean of Library Services, Tracey Ledger-Hornby had a wonderful event honoring these alumni and friends of WPI: Robert Goddard, Class of 1908 and father of modern rocketry; Richard Whitcomb ’43, aviation pioneer; and Duane Pearsall, who first conceived the idea of a home smoke detector.

BIG DATA TOPIC of UNIVERSITY LECTURE NOVEMBER 5

EMC Sales’ chief technology officer Patricia Florissi will deliver the University Lecture, “Big Data,” from 5 to 6 pm Monday, Nov. 5, in Alden Memorial. The lecture is free and open to the public; all alumni are invited to attend. A reception will follow. Florissi believes we are at a very exciting tipping point in history from a sociological and scientific perspective. In her presentation, Florissi will discuss how technology—and the availability of scientific and social data—are the result of a convergence of forces that will usher in a new era of scientific enlightenment and social revolution, and how Big Data is enabling and accelerating discoveries in science as well as transforming the way we do business, work, and live.

LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE PROGRAM for ALUMNI

Many men and women will live into their 80s and beyond as a result of societal changes and medical advances—and even the healthiest and most independent will need some support along the way.

Long-Term Care (LTC) insurance can help with costs for in-home care, adult day care, or even assisted living. According to the 2012 Long-Term Care Insurance Sourcebook, roughly one million Americans now reside in assisted living residences and the average monthly cost last year was $3,350 per-month—a five percent increase over the prior year.

Our Alumni Insurance Program offers alumni and their family members the opportunity to consult with LTC advisors free of charge to determine the best coverage for their situation. For more information, including free quotes, visit Meyer and Associates today.
