IN MEMORIAM: Van Bluemel, Professor Emeritus of Physics

Van Bluemel, professor emeritus of physics, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012, at the age of 78. He had retired in 1999 after 33 years as a full-time faculty member and remained active at the Institute in a variety of capacities, most recently serving on a committee overseeing the development of a new WPI history.

"Van was a fixture at WPI and played an important role in the life of the Institute as well as the Department of Physics," said Physics Department Head Germano Iannacchione. "His many passions and activities have touched the lives of countless people. No one could ask for a finer example of a professor or a human being." BEST WISHES to ANASTASIA GRADY

The Alumni Relations team and Alumni Association said good-bye to Anastasia Grady at the end of November. Anastasia was part of the Office of Alumni Relations for nearly five years, most recently as associate director, and was a key contributor to such programs as the Project Center Receptions, Regional Chapter and Club activities, Tech Old Timers, and Homecoming and Reunion, among others. Anastasia is now the director of Alumni and Parents Programs at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The Alumni Association and Alumni Relations team congratulate Anastasia on her new position and they are glad to know she isn’t too far away from her friends at WPI. Anastasia is also an alumna, receiving her MBA in 2012—so we are sure to see her back on campus soon!

While Anastasia worked with several programs, the Alumni Relations team is at your service; please contact 508-831-5600 or alumni-office@wpi.edu for assistance.

THE 2012 ORNAMENT—GET 'EM WHILE THEY LAST!

In 1916, WPI completed the construction of the university’s first indoor athletic facility – Alumni Gymnasium. Today, with the addition of the Sports and Recreation Center to campus, this venerable WPI landmark enters a new phase of life as a hub of innovation and project-based problem solving.

This year's ornament – which illustrates some of the building's most recognizable features – celebrates Alumni Gym for its contributions to the college experiences of WPI students both past, present and future. Each three dimensional keepsake ornament is made from 24k gold finish over brass and is packaged in an attractive gift box. Ornaments are $20 each. Order yours today!
