WALKWAY BRICKS REMOVED DURING QUAD RENOVATION

The Quadrangle is undergoing a renovation this summer. New pathways, landscaping, and lighting are going in, and cars are going out. The Quadrangle will be restored to a fully pedestrian area. Due to this beautification project, all Centennial Walkway bricks have been removed and new bricks will be installed by fall 2013. Information about the Centennial Walkway and how you can become a part of it is available here or by calling the Office of Alumni Relations at 508-831-5600.

ARAM KALENIAN AWARD: ALUMNI ENCOURAGED to APPLY!

The Kalenian Award, established in 2006 through the generosity of Alba Kalenian in memory of her late husband Aram, provides seed funds to support and advance the ideas and inventiveness of WPI students, faculty, and alumni. Aram Kalenian ’33 was an inventor who had numerous useful ideas and reduced many of them to practice. The purpose of the Kalenian Award is to encourage similar innovation and entrepreneurship at any stage of development from the WPI academic community through annual funding of a single viable invention. Alumni are encouraged to apply. The Intent to Compete is due Sept. 23 before midnight, and the Proposal due Oct. 23 before midnight. More information is available online. Contact Gina M. WPI RAISES $30 MILLION

In the fiscal year that closed on June 30, WPI raised more than $30 million for if…The Campaign to Advance WPI. As of July 8, the campaign stands at more than $144.6 million and 72 percent toward the $200 million goal. Many thanks to the alumni, parents, and friends who so generously support WPI students and faculty in their quest to make a positive difference in the world. If…alumni and friends help us reach our $200 million goal, our students will have the means to achieve their aspirations for the benefit of us all.

WPI ANNOUNCES INTERIM LEADERSHIP PLAN

At a campus-wide town hall meeting on June 19, Philip B. Ryan '65 announced that he has been elected interim president of the university. Accordingly, he resigned his position as chairman of the WPI Board of Trustees; Warner Fletcher has been elected the new board chair.

“As WPI continues its ascent, the Board of Trustees wants to ensure that the university continues to thrive under strong leadership," Ryan said. "As we prepare to launch a thorough and thoughtful search for WPI’s 16th president, the board convened to discuss next steps. Together we determined that it would be best for the university if I were to commit myself fully to the role of interim president during the entirety of the search.”  Read more...

IN MEMORIAM: ROBERT WAGNER, PROFESSOR EMERITUS
and "DADDY WAGS" to GENERATIONS of STUDENTS

Robert E. "Bob" Wagner, who taught chemical engineering at WPI for 40 years and touched thousands of lives through his award-winning teaching, his advising and mentorship, and his passion for the outdoors, died June 15, 2013, at his home in Shrewsbury, Mass. He was 92. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on July 27, 2013, at the First Congregational Church at 19 Church Road in Shrewsbury, Mass. Burial with military honors will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury. There are no calling hours. Read more...

An Evening at Tanglewood

August 24; reception and dinner at 6 pm; concert at 8 pm
 

Enjoy the Boston Pops Orchestra's Film Night at Tanglewood, a beloved annual tradition created by Laureate Conductor John Williams. Tickets are $100 per person and include dinner in the Tanglewood Formal Gardens Tent prior to the performance. Limit of two tickets per person; tickets sold on a first come, first served basis. Whitney Goldstein Named Head Softball Coach 
Whitney (Mollica) Goldstein has been named WPI’s head softball coach. Goldstein, who will have additional responsibilities within the department, including teaching physical education classes, replaces the recently retired George Legacy. Goldstein spent the last three seasons at regional power Amherst College. Learn more

Poole Selected as Head Volleyball Coach
 

Greg Poole has been appointed Head Women's Volleyball Coach. Poole will have additional responsibilities within the department, including teaching physical education classes. Poole has 15 years of Division III coaching experience, including nine years at Western New England and six years at Western Connecticut, where he amassed a total of 259 wins and garnered Little East Conference Coach of the Year accolades in 2007. Learn more

Fall 2013 Schedules Released
 
The WPI Athletic Department recently unveiled the 2013 fall schedules. Followers of @WPIAthletics on Twitter were the first to know when each schedule was released. As a teaser, the action starts on Friday, Aug. 30, with Volleyball participating in the Regis Tournament and Men's Soccer taking on Becker in the City Tournament at Worcester State. Learn more

Students Named Track and Field Academic All-Americans
 

Noelle Richard, Julie Eagle, Stephen Kocienski and Wesley DeChristofaro have been named Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-Americas for Track and Field/Cross Country. It marks the first time each have earned All-America honors. The four join field hockey's Becca Sharpe and women's rower Corre Steele as Academic All-Americans for this academic year, equaling the school record of six. Learn more

First University-offered Graduate Certificate in Program Protection Planning 
Program protection planning is a structured way for companies to strategically plan for and manage security risks. The Department of Defense strongly emphasizes the need for intelligent and effective program protection plans. WPI is the first university to equip systems engineers and defense contractors with solid education and training in program protection planning through our new graduate certificate program. The online program is available for a fall 2013 start. The program is also available for corporate cohorts either on-site or online – find out more about our customized corporate programs.
