Alumni Weekend 2014 is coming up May 29 through June 1! Register today at wpi.edu/+alumniweekend and see who else is coming back to campus to experience tradition, relive fond memories, and have plenty of fun with friends. COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY: April 26

Join alumni, students, and staff on Saturday, April 26 for the Alumni Association’s annual family-friendly Community Service Day in Worcester. Check-in at the Rubin Campus Center begins at 8:15 am. Morning service projects (hopefully in the spring sunshine) begin at 9 am and will be followed by lunch and the Alumni Association’s annual meeting at 12:30 pm. This event is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the broader WPI community of alumni, students and staff, do some good for the Worcester community, and learn about what the Alumni Association Board of Directors is working on and how you can help. CLASS of 2006 GIFT DEDICATION: April 26

Join us Saturday, April 26, at 2 pm for a reception and celebratory ribbon cutting to dedicate three beautiful patio tables to the Class of 2006. The tables, located at the Carr Plaza, are sure to become a popular retreat for meeting friends, relaxing and studying. The event will be held at the Carr Plaza, outside the Nitsch/Magliozzi Entrance of the Sports and Recreation Center (Rain location: Kazin Conference Room inside the Sports and Recreation Center). SANTA FE PROJECT CENTER RECEPTION: May 1

Alumni, parents, and friends will gather on Thursday, May 1 at the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe to hear from WPI student teams who have been working on projects at the Santa Fe Project Center during the current term. The event will be held from 5:30 to 8 pm, with museum galleries open from 5 to 6 pm. Please join us in celebrating the students' accomplishments, hear about what’s happening at WPI today, and network with fellow alumni and friends of the university. Learn more and register here.




THE SBIR PROGRAM: Using Government Money to Fund Your R&D

The Federal SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Program is a $2.4 billion federal R&D grant program to help small businesses engage in R&D with potential for commercialization. The seminar is designed to provide enough information for attendees to determine if they would like to seriously pursue proposal development, and to begin efforts to secure SBIR funding. This is a free seminar with limited seating - please register early. The seminar will be held Friday, May 2, from 9 am to noon at Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI), Gateway Seminar Room, Gateway Park, 60 Prescott St. Worcester. RED SOX OUTING: May 4

Join WPI alumni, family and friends at Fenway Park to see the World Champion Boston Red Sox take on the Oakland Athletics. We'll gather for the game and a BBQ on the Right Field Roof Terrace. Our ticket price ($60 per standing room, seated tickets have sold out already) is a fantastic value as it includes a great all-you-can-eat ballpark meal. Registration is required. Another Red Sox outing is coming up on Sept. 6.



STUDENT ALUMNI SOCIETY UPDATE

As D-term continues, warm weather brings along the Student Alumni Society’s (SAS) exciting traditions activities, along with new campus-wide events.

This year, the History Tribe began a campus-wide newsletter called "Daily Dose of Monthly History." Each month, the tribe chooses a topic that highlights something about WPI history. 2014 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER NAMED: Bernard Amadei, Founder of Engineers Without Borders-USA

WPI announced that Bernard Amadei, PhD, founder of Engineers Without Borders-USA, and co-founder of the Engineers Without Borders-International Network, will deliver the address at the university's 146th commencement exercises on Saturday, May 17, 2014, and will receive an honorary degree. Honorary degrees will also be awarded to Robert A. Foisie '56, retired founder of Matik North America Inc.; Sheila M. Harrity, nationally recognized principal of Worcester Technical High School; and Stephen E. Rubin ’74, entrepreneur and former chairman of the WPI Board of Trustees. Read more…


McDONOUGH LEGACY SPURS INNOVATION

WPI Trustee Neil McDonough has a special appreciation for innovation and entrepreneurship. Fifty-eight years ago, his father, Myles McDonough, quit his job to begin making plastic film laminates for women’s shoes and handbags in a rented garage in Spencer, Mass. With no bank loans or venture capital and using parts from old washing machines to make equipment, he started the business that became FLEXcon, a maker of pressure-sensitive films and adhesives with more than 1,000 employees worldwide and annual sales of $300 million. Swimming and Diving's Gagnon Selected as a 2014 Goldwater Scholar 
Swimmer Keith Gagnon has been named a 2014 Goldwater Scholar. Gagnon is a biomedical engineering major and plans to pursue both an MD and a PhD in Tissue Engineering to conduct research on cardiac muscle regeneration while working as a cardiothoracic surgeon. Learn more...

The 2014 WPI Football Alumni Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 7 at the Heritage Country Club in Charlton, Mass. Registration begins at noon, with a shot-gun start at 1 pm. The event will feature prizes, raffles, and a dinner in the evening.
